TxDOT announces the closure of SH 146 westbound connector ramp to IH 45 southbound HOUSTON– To continue the progress of the I-45 Gulf Freeway widening project in Galveston County, crews will permanently close the SH 146 westbound connector ramp to IH 45 southbound on Saturday, August 8 at 9 p.m. The ramp closure is needed to make way for the future I-45 mainlanes that will be constructed in the same footprint as the current SH 146 westbound connector ramp to IH 45 southbound. To facilitate this work, crews will close two mainlanes of I-45 Gulf Freeway southbound from FM 519 to Tiki Drive starting Saturday, August 8 at 9 p.m. until Monday, August 10 at 5 a.m. One lane of traffic will be open to southbound traffic during this time. The I-45 southbound entrance ramp from SH 6 will also be closed during this time for striping. Traffic will be detoured via FM 519. Once the SH 146 westbound connector ramp to I-45 southbound Traffic is closed, traffic will be detoured to SH 6 westbound under the I-45 mainlanes via a new U-turn lane that will provide access onto the I-45 southbound mainlanes. An additional detour route is to turn right onto the IH 45 northbound frontage road from the SH 146 westbound, merge onto northbound mainlanes, and exit at FM 519. Traffic to make a U-turn at FM 519 and head south onto southbound mainlanes. Heavy truck traffic will make a left turn onto FM 519 and another left turn onto IH 45 southbound frontage road to reach the I-45 southbound mainlanes. This traffic configuration will be in place for the next two years until the completion of the I-45 project in this location. The $226 million I-45 expansion project between FM 519 to the Texas City Wye in Galveston County is expected to be completed in 2030.
